At World Water Congress Forum, Dwikorita Mentions Climate Change and Water Crisis as Serious Threats to All Countries

BEIJING (September 14, 2023) - The Head of the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics of Indonesia (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati mention that climate change has an impact on water crisis and it increasingly becoming a serious threat, so all countries in the world must be concern and vigilance about it . According to her, the disruption of the hydrological cycle resulting in a water crisis is caused by the rapid pace of climate change, which is triggered by the increasing greenhouse gas emissions from human activities.

"Water is an important resource that supports the sustainability of human life and the planet, so managing it efficiently, sustainably and equitably for people and nature is one of the biggest challenges we face in this century," Dwikorita said at the 18th World Water Congress in Beijing, Wednesday (13/9).

"All countries must take part in addressing water issues and recognize the importance of water for sustainable development and the well-being of citizens. By prioritizing policies and programs that promote the conservation, protection and sustainable use of water, the upcoming 10th World Water Forum must produce concrete actions and results," she added.

Dwikorita was invited as one of the Keynote Speakers at the High Level Panel session with the topic 'Resilient Water Infrastructures and Global Water Security'. The event took place from September 11-15, 2023 at the Beijing China-Germany International Convention and Exhibition Center, Beijing.

Dwikorita pointed out that water is a cross-sectoral issue that affects many aspects of life, including agriculture, energy, health, environment, and climate resilience. Therefore, a strong political commitment is needed to address the water issue. If not, she added, then the predictions of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the World Food Agricultural Organization (FAO) regarding the global food crisis in 2050 are not a figment of the imagination.

Heads of State, Dwikorita added, play an important role in the World Water Forum process to set the agenda and provide leadership in addressing the world's water challenges. Therefore, Heads of State are responsible for ensuring that water gets the top priority it deserves, which means that policies and programs that are made must guarantee the implementation of efficient, sustainable, fair and equitable management of water resources.

"Overall, the Head of State's participation in the World Water Forum is very important to help raise the importance of efficient and equitable water management and access, as a global priority, and can facilitate equitable cooperation between regions and countries," she said.

On the occasion, Dwikorita also emphasized the importance of climate science and applied climate services, to support the development of resilient water resources infrastructure, to deal with accelerating climate change. Climate science and services, must have a strong role as the basis for policy making related to the climate change agenda, as well as the basis for developing climate-resilient and sustainable infrastructure.

"Science and technology can enhance various efforts and policies on climate change adaptation, mitigation, or countermeasures," she added.

Besides being the keynote speaker at the High Level Panel session, Dwikorita was also one of the speakers at one of the side events that was part of the 18th World Water Congress, to discuss the preparation of the '10th World Water Forum in Bali: Pathways toward "Water for Shared Prosperity". The 18th Congress event was also attended by PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono as one of the Keynote Speakers who also promoted that Indonesia will host the 10th World Water Forum in 2024 in Bali.
