The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) March - May 2017

The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is a drought index that only considers precipitation. SPI is a probability index of rainfall data where the negative index indicates a moderate dry condition of a positive index for wet conditions. SPI can be used to monitor conditions on various time scales. This time-scale flexibility allows SPI to be used for short-term agricultural and long-term applications for hydrology.
